PERFECT TENSES

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

PRESENT PERFECT:

· I have broken my pen. Now I can't write my essay! 

(We say the reason why can't use the pen now. The present perfect talks about a past action that has a consequence or affects the present.)

PAST SIMPLE:

· I broke my pen at school in the science test.

(We say what happened in the past, when and where, but we don't mention the present because it is not relevant or there isn't a connection.)


PRESENT PERFECT:

· I have lived here for ten years. 

(We say that we started to live in that house in the past, and we are still living there. The present perfect talks about a past action that has a consequence or affects the present.)

PAST SIMPLE:

· I lived here for ten years.

(We say what we had lived in that house in the past, but not anymore.)


PRESENT PERFECT (when something just happened):

· I have missed the bus. 

(We say that something just happened.)

PAST PERFECT:

· I had missed the bus (, before I left the house).

(We say what the action happened in the past, usually before another past action.)
