The phone rang while I was reading a book .= While I was reading a book ,the phone rang. (could be less commons and represents a long action (rang for a while)).
Look at these possible three tipes of sentences:
I was watching TV yesterday at 8:00pm. (past continuous acompañado de una time expression)
I was watching TV when the telephone rang. (past continuous acompañado de when y de un past simple)
I was watching TV while my brother was listening to music. (past continuous acompañado de while y de un past continuous)
